Threadcakes Cake Competition
I thought this design was so creative. I had a hard time choosing which Threadless design to use but this one stood out. It may look like a simple design with only 2 colors, but that is why I wanted the challenge. So often with cakes, the most simple design is the hardest cake to perfect because there aren't lots of decorations to hide the imperfections. In total, this cake took about 1 week to create. I wanted to get each fondant figure as accurate as possible. I finished the giant dog first and I was so happy and pleased with it. Well... my son is just tall enough to reach the counter. I turned my back for just a minute and I saw him biting the head off of the dog! Oh no! At least I had enough time during his nap to remake the dog. The other figures went really well. The biggest challenge was how to keep their heads from falling off. I put a drop of white chocolate on their shoulders and that seemed to work. Of course the next challenge I had was using the stencil on the fondant. You only get one shot when using dark frosting on white fondant. I had to do the stencil at least 3 times because it smudged. I finally got it right and placed the figures on the cake making sure to line them up just like in the picture. I added a camera on a tripod to tell more of the story as if they set the camera up on a timer to take a family picture. I just love each of their expressions, including the pictures on the wall! I made the frames from fondant using an impression technique. I then dusted the frames with pearl dust to give them an antique look. The cake was so delicious! My son and I ate most all of it before my husband could get a piece.

How to apply fondant to a cake without cracks...
I live 5280 feet above sea level, very high altitude so I understand this problem. I make sure that my fondant isn't dry at all when I knead it before putting it on the cake. Mix in shortening and don't use too much powdered sugar when rolling it out. Cover the cake as quickly as possible and make sure your fondant isn't too thick or the weight of it will cause cracks. I put the fondant on right after my crumb coat because I find that the bc helps the fondant stick. Then chill the cake right after you apply the fondant. This will set the fondant in place so it doesn't move causing it to crack. Chill until time of delivery and you should be fine. Also, make sure your cake is sturdy enough to support the weight of the fondant. You can add an extra 1/4 C of flour to your cake mix.

3-tiered wedding cake
This cake was inspired from a design chosen by the bride from mysweetandsaucy.com. I loved making this cake, it turned out so well. The gray buttercream added such a contemporary touch. The bottom tier was vanilla bean cake with buttercream. The middle tier was oreo cake with oreo chunk buttercream, and the top tier was vanilla bean with fresh banana Bavarian cream.

The beginning of my "frosted" dream...
I have always had cake on the brain. Since I was young, I used to love to go to the grocery store and watch the cake decorators while my parents shopped. I took cake decorating classes from the local craft store in high school and my love for cakes exploded. I went to college and graduated with a degree in Education and worked as a teacher and nanny for the past 5 years. I was decorating cakes on the side, and completed formal training while I was pregnant. After getting married to my wonderful husband and having my amazing son, I've realized that now is the time to make my dream a reality. So Frosted Dreams Bakery was born.
